Apart from the traditional Goju Ryu Karate forms, we have some extra Kata in Kenyukan Goju Ryu. They reflect the perfect harmony between Okinawan and Japanese Goju Ryu Karate Do, Okinawa Kobudo and Tsuruken. Without compromising the "core" of the form, we have arranged them according to the student's ranks, and they show and represent a very comprehensive research and study of both Karate systems. We have also incorporated traditional Okinawan weapons Kata into the syllabus, to convert the system into a well rounded Martial Art.

However, and depending on the style and some other factors, many have created very "radical" expressions of Kata, - for others they have become better known as "necessary" burdens, and some use them as an opportunity to show off fanciful moves. Some have been changed and modified many times, to the point where, no one knows what the original was like any more. It seems that the advent of Tournaments and the price of fame, has brought some Instructors to knowingly change things to suit themselves, without regard for the work and dedication our forefathers put on the development of these Katas.

Now we see the proliferation of Kata that until recently were considered "classics", being changed and defaced, so they can score higher points at the local Championships! Some of the more appalling examples have been those where flying kicks, rolling on the floor and some other fantasy moves have been added, to make them more competitive. The result is in the eye of the beholder.
